Shot Day

Not counting his shots in the hospital after delivery, today was Ben’s first full round of immunizations. And he did amazingly well. My wife…that’s literally a different story.

I had read about possible ways to minimize pain – from Emla cream to sugar water on a pacifier to distracting him during the shot (yeah right – not sure he could see me as he turned bright red and slammed his eyes shut as he wailed). Emla cream seems too much work and our favorite nurse of Ben’s said most pain is not the skin but the shot fluid in the muscle itself…Makes sense.

Ben was great though. I’ll leave the emotional details to Jen. We just distracted him…that is until the shot. His nurse did an fantastic job. (Ya! to Brentwood Children’s Clinic!) She was already done with the 2nd shot before he knew what was going on. Then he lost it. And afterward, I picked him up right away and gave him a great big hug. He calmed down in about 30 seconds and he was done fussing in about a minute.

I think next time we’ll try more than just distracting him. I might try the sweet pacifier during the next one as prep to get those endorphins running. All is good now.

Ben's First Shot Day

Here’s a pic afterward back at the house. As you might expect, he was pretty tired by then. We gave him some Tylenol and he slept on Jen for a while.
