New/Old Music Rodrigo y Gabriela – ‘Tamacun’

They’re not new but new to anyone reading this I’d bet.  Assuming someone looks at this to see if I’ve posted since August. (mom)

And fun to watch too. If you follow on to YouTube you’ll have to check out Diablo Rojo about a roller coaster of all things. They have also done Metallica and Led Zeppelin covers.

Find them on Amazon.

Music Pick – August by Mark Erelli

Not an album but a song from a talented singer-songwriter Mark Erelli. He’s put out some great albums and played with other talented artists. His monthly website posts include free downloads. I just listened to his freebie of the month, a song titled August. (right-click to download)

Mark Erelli

Whether you’re sitting on the front porch watching the evening come up, kicking back at the beach peering through your toes at your kids playing in the sand, or if you’ve just put your baby to sleep and uncorked a bottle of wine to share with your better half…this song is there waiting for you.

And if you’re not doing one of those things – this song will put you in that mood to just let life take place for a little while, pick a simple thing and just be. As it’s written, it’s not about anything happening – it’s about life that takes place when nothing is happening. I love that.

Jen and I had the good fortune of seeing Mark play here in Nashville with Lori McKenna at Nashville’s Frist art museum during their Frist Fridays series last summer. Great music from both. Here are some photos from our evening there.

Music Pick: Keith Urban’s Defying Gravity

Okay – since I’m not following new releases from this week – hey, I have a 3 month old – I am stepping back a few weeks to Keith Urban’s latest. Defying Gravity.

Having seen him in concert and all the energy he has live, it’s good to see such an optimistic and happy album come out from him. Another thing you realize in concert is just how amazing he is as a musician. By far one of the best guitarists you’ll ever come across.

This album is a happy summer, “I want to sit on the front porch drinking iced tea and listening to music,” kind of album. His guitar playing is as important as the lyrics on some of the songs. And there’s a bit more pop and rock in this one – I do miss the more authentic country tone to past hits. The song Sweet Thing, his first single from this new album, reminds me of his earlier release Be Here.

Gotta love the blend of electric guitar with banjo. The whole world needs more banjo. Listen in below.

Post your thoughts. I’m going to get one of my friends to like country and will keep reviewing until I do.

Music Pick – DMB’s Big Whiskey

Watched the week-long series on cable introducing this album – great stuff. Tim Reynolds is back in and guest producers that shaped the last couple of albums are out. I still give those albums credit as they produced some great songs that DMB perform well live – such as Louisiana Bayou from Red Rocks. Then there’s Bartender, Grey Street, Every Day,and Grace is Gone, among others.

Some tracks on Big Whiskey to mention – from radio plays like Funny The Way It Is (their first single) and Why I am, to DMB’s softer side with Dive In, You & Me and Lying In The Hands Of God to pure Dave – Alligator Pie & Spaceman. There’s something for every DMB fan on this album. And those of us that like the eclectic of all their work, will probably like the whole thing.

Back to Big Whiskey as a whole – Five Stars on iTunes, 4 stars from Rolling Stone, 4-1/2 on Amazon. And die-hard fans are saying it is a close 2nd to all-time favorite Before These Crowded Streets. Seems like the band had two options – they could have folded up and gone separate ways or put out this great semi-tribute album after losing LeRoi. Tribute’s not the right word but it does honor Moore’s role in the band with direct and indirect references all over.

Listen in by clicking the album below.

I will try to post an album a week. I’m using Amazon as it’s the easiest to get music samples into the post. We bought it. Ben loves DMB (not that he has a choice at 2 months old).
